HERB - ear wax? and other wound dressings?

Since one of the functions of earwax is to *catch and hold* anything that
might seek entrance thru the ear canal, I would doubt this bit until I saw
scientific confirmation. From what I understood, earwax was ususally *full*
of bacteria -- just from doing its job!

Subject: HERB - ear wax? and other wound dressings?
Date: Sun, 6 Aug 2000 13:42:41 -0400 (EDT)

So last night, as the nice emergency room doctor was removing my
fingernail to get out the piece of sewing needle I put in my hand, I told
him that I was going to be going camping and should I put any special
dressing on the wound, like Neosporin? He says, "Well, it would keep the
bandage from sticking; it doesn't do much else, but you can put it on if
you want to." He followed that up with "Ear wax is antibacterial, if
you're out in the woods you can just use some of that instead..."

1) was he just pulling my leg about the ear wax? Has anyone else heard
this from a modern source?

2) Other than Neosporin, (and ear wax) what would be a good wound
ointment? (I've already had to soak off the dressing they put on at the
hospital, ointment is obviously going to be a necessity. *sigh*) My mom
swears by Vitamin E; I used to use Zam-buk, a green herbal ointment from
Canada, but I can't get that anymore. Recommendations?
