Based on nothing other than a similarity in names, my guess would be clove
gillyflowers, otherwise known as Carnations or Dianthus Caryophyllus.  (I think
I spelled that right.)  They've been used in food, drink, and perfumes for
centuries.  I'm currently trying to grow enough to make mead.  ;>
