I believe that it was used because it is apparently highly astringent.
Actually Nostradamus gives two recipes for "The Sublimate".   Sublimate was 
a very popular medicinal as well as a cosmetic.  Monardes recommends using 
it on festering wounds because it would apparently dissolve the damaged 
tissue.
