Well, as luck would have it, you're coming close to what
Gerard and several others would have you do in preparation
of many ointments in period. Gerard and Culpepper (ok, OOP)
both say "until the herbes be as it were burnt" when
describing the cooking time (Gerard, p. 349, Dover edition;
Culpepper, p. 217, Gleave and Son facsimile edition).
