Has anyone run across recipes for long hair in period sources,
redacted/recreated such recipes, or have any suggestions for a starting point?
Especially scented oils or treatments for European hair.
Why do I ask? Well...it started because I depend on my sunflower detangler
mist to control my long hair. It seemed to be an oil & alcohol mix (I had to
shake it before I used it each time). However, I cannot find any more - and
all the junk sold in stores has apple/berry scents in it, which attracts bees
and other unsavory bugs. I thought it would be fun to create a detangler with
bug-repellant scents, such as citronella & lavendar, for SCA camping events.
Also, I have been working on a hairstyle class outline, and period hair
recipes would make a good subsection (if not a class of its own).
I know the standard "Hair Omelet" conditioner (beaten eggs & milk) used to
strengthen hair and the "Vinegar" rinse used to cleanse hair, but am not sure
of their origins. The henna and chamomile dyes/rinses are fairly easy to
document from my dyeing research. But my cosmetic research is skimpy, and I'm
not sure even where to begin.
Can anyone give me a starting point?
Thanks,
Lady Wyllow MacMuireadhaigh (of the Loch)
