Why are brass motor and pestle important?

 I have a Marble (stone) one and am looking for a
Ceramic Cast iron, black ribbled are a fashion Kitchen
accessory at the moment but i have no idea what
authentic stuff woul of been?
 I would be interested in knowing the whys and where
fores of apothicary equipment
