Most real root beer is made from Sassafras which is New World.  Granted I 
have seen it entered in SCA beverage competitions which did not require 
documentation, but my guess would be that it is out of period...of course 
one can end up with root beer with alcohol in it if it is made a bit 
differently than the usual
