Red bugs (cochineal) can be had from most dyer's
supply places. Dharma Trading Co. is one.

Richter's in Canada sells indigo, woad, weld, and
madder seeds. I believe Rose Madder is a lake type
paint made from madder root, which along with indigo
is also available from Dharma and other dye suppliers.
There was an article in TI 6-7 years ago by a lady
translating a master's book, describing a pink paint
she made from madder using the 16th C. recipe.
Village Weaving and Spinning in Solvang carries lots
of natural dyes. One of our illuminators was planning
to make a blue from iris. I noticed that a blue iris
I'd forgotten in a vase had started to drip blue goo
on leaves of another flower, so it looks like it
should work. I think it needs to be used with alum.
Just got a copy of Cennini from doverpublications.com,
and I've started reading his paint recipes. Sounds
like a whole lot of period paints are poisonous.
