Um, Virginia creeper doesn't exactly match your initial description of
the leaves.  Didn't you say your vine had large heart shaped leaves?
Virginia creeper has five leaflets or a palmate leaf, somewhat similar to
a small version of a marijuana leaf.  It is commonly confused in these
parts with poison ivy (which has only 3 leaflets).  In the Arkansas
Ozarks, Virginia creeper is not as invasive as what you experienced (it
will be strangled by kudzu, passionflower, and honeysuckle, among
others), but the fall foliage is a beautiful red.  It will strangle
trees, left to its own devices....
