>Adding beeswax to an ointment or salve seems to act as a preservative

True and an excellent book that touches upon this topic is Guido
Majno's book "The Healing Hand" which covers all manner of
information on wounds and their treatment before, during and after
our researched time period.

>Oils that were available at least late in period would include olive oil,
>castor oil (Gerard calls this oleum cicinum or kik), almond oil - all of
>these are mentioned in period herbals.

In truth, nearly any nut oil would have been suitable if the nut was
native the area. Grewe and Hiett in their edition translation 4
versions of the Libellus De Arte Coquinaria discuss this to some
extent in their commentary on walnut oil and its recipe for making
that appears in the manuscript(s).
