JOB DESCRIPTION
Performs transportation maintenance work.  Work requires use of
maintenance tools and operation of light equipment.  Has multiple areas
of responsibility.  Work requires contact with private entities. 
Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments;
however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Maintains highways and rights-of-way; erects and repairs guard rails,
highway markers and signs.
Learns to operate complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large
gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving
machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling
machine.
Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half
cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel,
paint striper and dump truck.
Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter
cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box,
backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing
and minor repairs on equipment.
Fills out various required reports including time-keeping, equipment
forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
Assists in sanding bridges and roads, posting warning signs, helping
the public and performing other work as directed during emergency
situations such as floods, tornadoes, snowstorms, accidents and
hazardous material spills.
Performs roadway repairs and hauls materials to job sites.
Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs
and barricades; flags traffic.
Picks up litter and roadway debris.
Performs plant and landscape maintenance including trimming trees and
brush.
Maintains picnic, rest areas, and maintenance yards.
Mows rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas.
Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at
accident sites.
Assists stranded motorists as required.
Repairs and installs signs and delineators, mail box supports and
posts, and performs some welding.
Assists in inspection of roadways during day and night to identify
damaged and missing delineators and signs.
Assists in performing sign inventories.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience
 One (1) year experience in maintenance, construction or equipment
operation.  (Experience requirements may be satisfied by full-time
experience or the prorated part-time equivalent.)
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES  

Working knowledge of
   maintenance procedures and requirements
    the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
    applicable safety requirements
    vehicle maintenance and repair procedures 

Skill in
   the use of applicable tools and equipment of the trade
    the use of welding equipment 

Ability to
   move up to 50 pounds
    occasionally move up to 100 pounds, examples include bags of
cement, barricades, signs, tires, etc.

    work in heavy traffic, cramped spaces, variable weather conditions
and at varied heights
    communicate effectively
    maintain effective working relationships
    prepare and maintain records, files and reports
 
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
 External final applicants for any department position who could
potentially be required to drive for the department must pass a drug
test prior to employment and will be subject to reasonable cause testing
during employment.

 Driver's record check will be conducted by the department. 
Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal
vehicles and motor-driven equipment to conduct agency business.
Must have a Commercial Driver License at time of application.
Must pass a drug test prior to employment for commercial driver, safety
sensitive and vessel crewmember positions.  Commercial drivers, safety
sensitive employees and vessel crewmembers will be subject to additional
drug and alcohol testing during employment.
In addition to the Commercial Driver License, the employee must have or
obtain within 90 calendar days of employment the X endorsement on their
CDL.
Required to work weekends and holidays.
Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and
comply with all safety requirements.

REMARKS

Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can
report to work for emergency conditions.  

As part of its employment process, TxDOT may procure or have prepared a
criminal background check.  An applicant with an unsatisfactory criminal
background check report is ineligible to be hired for the position for
which the report is initiated.
