1529 In Germany at the Diet of Spires (Speyer), a document signed by
Lutheran leaders in fourteen cities lodged a "protest" which demanded a
freedom of conscience and the right of minorities. Henceforth, the German
Lutheran Reformers were known as "Protestants."
