It is a sad fact that insensitive people like you described exist in all
groups and organizations. I know many people that came to the SCA only to
leave because of the ignorant ravings of someone like that "lady". I am
proud of you for not taking that path. The alternatives are to ignore them
or confront them. Neither one will probably change the way that they "go
off" on people so I usually recommend you ignore them. Along with ignoring
them you could seek out someone that is not so "correct" and ask them for
guidance. It may end up with a good laugh instead of the justifiable
irritation you felt.

Prey tell how does everyone deal with the period police? The reason I am
asking is the last event we went to a lady in a very lovely gown approached
me and started in telling me that my wheel chair was not period and I
shouldn't come to events in it. Now knowing I cant walk and have to have my
chair (and have been working on a way to hide it and make it look like a
chariot) how would ye handle this lady? I took it as she was telling me not
to come to events. No I don't know her name nor where she resides from (yes
this happened at Protectorate) and welp I have mulled it over and not gone
to events thinking this over. Suggestions?
