*snip*On various posts I've seen signatures that included lines like..."house of the weeping unicorn" etc....
What house is this? What houses are there? What are their significance? What does it mean to be part of the house, guild, etc...? How does one become a member of such and does one want to?
*snip*

Households are a way people of similar goals/interests/backgrounds/family&friends group together socially in the SCA- there are many variations and subsets within groups...ie. households,clans,families,ships,guilds,steads,etc.... and each is founded with purposes- maybe the members are together for the purposes of tending fighters at war or maybe the members are together for mercenary purposes...maybe they all do the same or similar art and get together under that premise... or maybe they are all just good friends and family that have fun together and have based their personas together and make a "family"

the formation is as simple as everyone just camping together and flying the same banner, to groups even going outside the normal SCA events and having parties/trips etc together, going to wars together, and so on.... I have seen households with as few as 3 members and as many as 300 members spanning several kingdoms (where email communication is VERY helpful)....the way one joins a household varies from household to household- some are open to anyone who wants to participate, some require that you do that particular thing they are set up under (fighting/A&S), and some require you to be taken in by a sponsor as an initiate.... generally the households around here are pretty easy to find as the banners are always flying and many have large camps with gates set up around them.... some are large enough to hold specific events-- like Company of Wolves hosted by House Wolfstar....

households are just like other groups in the sca- you get out of them what you put into them.... many houses have household specific awards as well, and some have the friendly competition of household rivalry and some are allianced together.... either way they enrich the SCA experience by giving a member a deeper sense of belonging and extended family when they may otherwise be lost or confused in a much larger barony....
there used to be a webpage listing the major ones for ansteorra and how they are set up as far as membership, but the easiest way to find out is just ask someone who happens to be flying that banner or wearing that interesting-looking favor at an event... they will all be proud to tell you about their houses :)
