[Namron] Must see this Article! Controversy of Yearbook Photoof Scadian in Garb!

Greetings,

I thought people might want to frame the discussion based upon the "Zero Tolerance" policy (from Providence, RI, Student Handbook):

Any students found to be in possession of a weapon, or involved in an aggravated assault will immediately be

referred to the Student Affairs Office for a hearing which may result in exclusion from school for anywhere from 60

days to 180 days or for a duration in accordance with Rhode Island State Law.

If the weapon involved is a gun or look-alike gun or falls into a category covered by the federal Gun-Free Schools Act

Of 1994, a mandatory one-year exclusion for a period of one hundred eight days (180) (calendar days) will be in

effect after due process requirements are met. In all cases involving weapons or aggravated assault in school or on

school grounds, the local police will be called. School grounds include, but are not limited to actual property owned by

the school, areas around the schools, parking lots, school-sponsored events (whether on or off school grounds),

school busses, and school bus stops

Well, it doesn't look like a gun. If he took the picture on school property, he'd be expelled or in jail...which doesn't appear to have happened.

My question is what other pictures have been allowed in the year book...and I don't know how to get hold of that from here.

...and I'll bet if it happened in Texas or Oklahoma, we wouldn't be hearing about some damnable law suit.

Regards,
Tadhg

That makes no difference at all, I failed to see any where he was advocating the use of violence in any way. For all I care he could have had a bradley fighting vehicle and the and the message would be the same, this is what I like to do. no intent to glorify violence.
This political correctness crap is really getting to me. When I grew up it was common to carry a rifle or shotgun to school in your trunk, or in your hands if given to the office for safe keeping during the day, for hunting after school and no I did not live in the country, I lived in Petersburg, 20 miles south of Richmond Va.. As for a knife, don't make me laugh, everyone, male, female as well as the teachers carried one, a knife is a TOOL folks, used for cutting when needed, a weapon was anything grabbed to hurt someone else with, chair, brick, eraser etc. Use your brains people.

Oh come on people. Was I the only one who saw the GREAT BIG HONKING SWORD over his shoulder? I can’t argue with the schools on this one.

What if he was dressed in camouflage utilities and had an AK-47 over his shoulder and was a survivalist/militiaman? Would THAT be ok?

That’s the same thing, just in different eras.

Had he dressed in period garb WITHOUT weapons, he wouldn’t have had any trouble. The school has a no weapons no tolerance policy. What does that have to do with garb? Nothing. But that monster of a sword is a horse of a different color.

I was appalled at the response that picture got on the aol boards.. out of curiosity i went and looked at some of the responses to the pic on the boards.. it ranged from calling the kid a moron, a freak, and a punk, to saying the mom was irresponsible. I personally haven't been playing very long in the SCA, but have enjoyed it immensly, and any child who would rather come spend his weekends dressing in garb and enjoying himself with a bunch of intresting and honorable people has a vote in my book!

      Greetings all!

I saw this article over aol news, and opened it out of curiosity. Turns out it's a controversy of a young Scadian's yearbook photo. They were concerned it promoted violence...why? Beacuse he was in GARB!

Anyway, look it over and post thoughts. The debate should be interesting. (And maybe we could write a few letters???)
