  Well Said Lady Genevria.

I witnessed much of the work our autocrats put into XXX and know that they worked night and day for many weeks to do all they could to make this a memorable event. I want to stop now and say thank you to them for all the work they did in making my first ever Protectorate a special memory!

I have to put on a large annual event mundanely, and I know that at the end of the event, one often feels it to be a thankless and messy job. It is frustrating to hear input that might be taken as negative, although I'm sure most is not meant that way.

During our library events, I try to take an informal poll of the people attending, asking what they liked, what they didn't like, what we could do better in the future, what could we add or subtract. Then I share those comments with the board and we work together to find ways to improve the event and make it easier on ourselves at the same time.

Perhaps instead of just making one or two people the autocrats or stewards of an event, we should have a board or committee overseeing events. This way there is strength in numbers and we don't wear out good people who do one or two events and then are so exhausted and worn out and mentally deflated afterward that they hardly want to play with us anymore, much less run another event! LOL.

Also, instead of everyone picking the event apart on the list, what if we had a suggestion box that the committee/steward could collect and review without feeling like a whipping boy/girl? I KNOW there are ALWAYS problems at events, and ALWAYS room for improvement, but surely we can find a constructive way of making suggestions while we are also thanking those who put so much effort into trying to please us for a long weekend....

These are only suggestions, and opinions, and you KNOW what everyone says about opinions....LOL

  Love to all!

Lady Samarah Basimah Latifa al Dhakira bint Anaan bint Mellilah

God be with you in every pass. Jesus be with you on every hill. Spirit be with you in every stream, headland, ridge and law, each sea and land, each moor and meadow, lying down and rising up,in the trough of the waves or on the crest of the billow. Each step of the journey you go, go with God.

I think one of the things we need to look at when making the decisions about sites to use is the return we receive for the expense. To use Danielle's example of the equestrian tourney, is the approximate $2000 more we apparently paid to use this site worth the pleasure of continuing to sponsor an equestrian tourney? I would like to know the financial committee's', both past and current, thoughts on this.

I am not trying to encourage finger pointing here. We need to evaluate what we, as the populace of this Barony, thought about this event. We need to encourage the exchange of ideas so we can work together for future events. We have a work crew who is willing to jump in and do some improvements to make Camp Cimmeron better for the SCA, but we want to direct all this energy and enthusiasm for the best of the Barony. It is my hope that Danielle and the many others who worked so hard on the planning of this years Protectorate will not take this as a personal attack, and will want to be part of the evaluation process. I know just how difficult it is to hear complaints about an event that you have worked so hard to produce, but that is the only way for everyone to make good decisions in the future.

    Greetings!
For all of those who have ideas about sites to use, or would like to see changes in future events, I have a suggestion... put in a bid to be an event steward. As an event steward, (or co event steward if that would be more feasible) you would get to make decisions about things such as which site to use, how much to charge, and other important decisions. If these sound like decisions that you would like to make, do some research to find a site, make a bid and submit it. It is easy to sit on the list and make suggestions, but it is much more productive to take those suggestions and do something about future events. We looked at new and different sites for Protectorate, but the reasons that we decided not to use them were specific to Protectorate XXX. You may want to use a different site for the next one. I am very much in favor of finding new sites, and I wish you luck. Please remember though, if your bid does not meet the requirements needed to put on one of the championship competitions (i.e. the equestrian tourney) it may not be accepted.
    In Service,
    Lady Danielle de Marseilles
