Most places do close it at night, but really, me and my sister love to have a really fun "gate party".?? there is usually singing, drinking, some dancing and loads of other things.? 

And in jest, there wasnt even a 2-4 slot, we wrote it in!!

Being new to Kingdom (and to the Barony) I had forgotten that gates are manned all night...is there really a need to have it thus?? Is there a feeling of "if you don't get the money as they walk in that they will not pay"?? or just convience? or am I no where near the mark?

Yes, I do realize travelers arrive at all times of the day and night, but if it were me arriving late, I would just want to set up camp, hit the sack, and pay when?I got up.? :-)
