Unto the Populace of the Barony of Namron, Greetings Again!

This fourth missive to your email list will cover some behavioral
topics. This will be the last missive for this month. Next month,
once the candidates are known to Their Majesties, I'll publish two
more emails that will cover how to make your comments on candidates
known to the Crown (which will likely be due in early February) and
I'll detail the polling process that will happen in February. I'll
announce the interview schedule as soon as it is set.

Each of the emails I submit about the baronial selection process has
my permission for your chronicler and web minister to reprint in your
newsletter or post online on a page of your web site.

Applying to be Baron/ess is exactly like applying for a professional
job. Descriptions exist (see Kingdom Law and Corpora) and candidates
are evaluated in comparison to their ability to perform those duties.
References are accepted (polling and letters to the Crown). You can
be fired for not doing your job.

Some baronies, across the entire SCA, have issues when baronial
selections occur. Political factions may form (or already exist),
candidates will trash each other, etc. It can get ugly. Applying for
the coronet positions is not like a high school popular campaign to
the student council. While the populace is polled to see the general
feelings of the populace about the candidates, that polling is a
reference for the Crown to use in making their selection. It
absolutely is not an election. Just as a hiring manager may want to
see references, they are going to pick the best candidate in their
opinion to do the job (which may or may not match the polling
results).

So, candidates, friends of candidates, heads of households, etc., all
need to be aware that their behavior is being watched while the
selection process is ongoing. Candidates who encourage positive
interactions will be seen favorably. Candidates who "attack" other
candidates will not be seen favorably. Candidates whose friends
attack other candidates will not be seen favorably. If a candidate
cannot keep their friends from verbally attacking other candidates,
then they may not be strong enough to hold this position and guide the
barony constructively.

Remember, whether you are a candidate or just know one, treat this
process like a professional job process and not like a bad, teen
angst, high school movie.
