This month's OU Medieval Fair Lecture Series will take an interesting look
at Medieval Dance, including a little "feet on" participation.

You are cordially invited to attend Holy Joy or Human Folly: Medieval
Attitudes Toward Dance at 6:30 pm Friday Nov. 18 in the Lowry Room at the
Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster.

Dr. Van Oort of St. Gregory's University discusses medieval controversies
about dance and the men and women who performed it. Dance was a lively part
of medieval festivities, and people danced to celebrate weddings, harvests,
and the feast days of saints. In the visions of the mystics, Christ and the
angels also danced. However, not everyone approved, and the arguments over
whether dance was an expression of sinful frivolity or sacred joy went on
for centuries, and still echo today. For the finale of her presentation she
will teach whichever audience members are up for it a simple medieval circle
dance.
