I am really getting sick of this hotmail junking messages stuff, -- if I
seem a little testy, honestly, it has nothing to do with this message.

A Route is a Major Road - the highways are "routes", for example: "prenez le
route de Lyons" (Take the road to Lyons)

A city street is a "rue"

>and yes CHEMIN can mean way but it also means road

Chemin - path, lane, track, way or direction, or route. Not to be confused
with "la chimenee", which is dirty.

Chemin de fer - "path of iron" or Railway (not to mention a card game
related to Baccarat)
"trover le chemin son" - to ask one's way
"le chemin de l'honneur" - the path of Honor
"nos chemins se sont" - our paths crossed.
"le chemin droit" - the left hand path.

So, while Chemin noir CAN argueably mean "black road" it would be more
likely translated by someone who spoke the language as "the black path" or
"the path of darkeness", which - while I -CAN- see it being used as a
metaphorical commentary on long past incidents, I doubt that's really what
you mean to convey.

Really, what I think you are wanting is what I suggested at Populace, which
was "Voie". This is used more often in things like "Voie Romaine" - Roman
Road, "Voie privee" - private road.

OTOH, no one ever listens to me around here anyway :)
