As the other co-founder of the tourney Angus is correct.

At the time this tourney originated pretty much every Ansteorran tourney
became a sword and shield grudge match. Angus and I prided ourselves
on (and really enjoyed) being able to use pretty much anything handed
us. So we built a tourney requiring the winner to show skill in
multiple weapon systems and a double elimination format as that seemed
to give the best tourney experience prep. Belted and non-locals were
allowed to participate as by-fights to round out the tree.

As time went by and more of us became holders of the title the Barony
wasn't adding new fighters at a rate great enough to keep it from
becoming a default four man tourney, so changes had to be made. A
melee round became part of the mix. This influence grew over time to
where melee leadership became the focus rather than breadth of
ability. Not saying that its the wrong course, just sayin' that's the
way it bent.

It's important to note that Angus and I were careful to define this as a
"fighters practice" not an official tourney as we wanted even trainee's
who had not yet authorized to be able to enter and gain experience.
And since its FP technically anyone can show up. The more the
merrier. But the actual decision of who can win is up to the Coronet
as it's their war leader who is being selected.

Frankly the fact it's still happening and enjoyed by many provides me a
lot of satisfaction. The narrative on the origins is somewhere on one
of the NK history pages. I have videos from a number of the early
tournies around here.
