Violet Le Duc ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eug%C3%A8ne_Viollet-le-Duc
) was an architect, builder, researcher, etc. for Emperor Napoleon the
3rd. through the mid-1800's The Emperor, among other castle owners in
France, commissioned him to restore period buildings etc. Prior to
beginning a restoration he would often find the oldest living people in
the area an interview them and then put together sketches bases on those
peoples childhood memories. From these sketches and any other surviving
drawings, paintings, tapestries, etc. he would develop plan and proceed
to rebuild. Perhaps one of his most noted works is Carcassonne in
southern France which is generally considered the finest example of a
walled medieval city still in existence. Other examples include Notre
Dame in Paris, and Mont St. Michael in Brittany. He published on a
number of topics.
