working through a new pile of reading materials ... 

from _The Barbarians Speak_, Peter S. Wells ... on roman empire and
expansion into temperate europe as it affected the "barbarian
cultures" (primarily germanic and gaulic/celtic).  

he notes that the roman legions (primarily auxillaries) stationed
along the frontiers were expected to equip themselves from local
resources.  this led to a explosion in the livestock industries of
the areas as the leather needs were immense - 54,000 calf skins per
legion to build the field tents they required (on top of other
leather needs ...).  in turn led to a abundance of meat allowing
rapid population growth that had been in decline previously.

full biblio review of this and several related works will appear in a
couple weeks in more appropriate areas.
