resolution to say for sure.

It might as easily have been a ring-and-whipstitch configuration. Why use different color thread for
the whip-stitch? So you can know at a glance if the threads are wearing and coming loose. I remember
sewing a few sails for the "training" hang gliders used  by a flying school; the school specified that
the sails be sewn with a contrasting thread to make them easier to inspect for damage. Made sense to
me.
