Hello, fellow tenties! :)

Our recent discussion of books made me wonder what sort of publications
you all might have in your personal 'tent libraries'. I know books and
info on ancient tents and portable structures can be hard to come by,
and wondered if some of us have some resources that others may not know
are available. Maybe we can share with each other.

Okay, I'll go first:

SPECIFICALLY TENT BOOKS:
--NOMAD TENT TYPES IN THE MIDDLE EAST, by Peter Alford-Andrews.Two
volumes, About 20 years of research, includes maps and extensive
diagrams. A must-see for yurt builders, and a cornerstone of my
library. Isbn 3-88226-890-5
--THE TENT BOOK by E. M Hatton.--includes good illustrations and history
of tents from many different cultures (also includes
         modern camping info. ISBRM 0-395-28264-0
--TENTS-Architecture of the Nomads, by Torvald Faegre.--the book that
got me started on non-European tents. Recommended
for those of you with the same interests. ISBN 0-385-11656-x
--THE INDIAN TIPIi, by Reginald and Gladys Laubin--covers history,
construction and use for many different tribes. ISBN 0-8061-2236-6
--GIPSY [sic] TENTS AND HOW TO USE THEM, by G. R. Lowndes, published
1890. Has a lot of interesting info on Gypsy tents, wagons, and camping
supplies, but I cannot verify how accurate the information is. Shows
Gypsy tents as basically being rib-type tents, with an attached
fabric-walled courtyard called a baulk, to reflect the heat from the
fire.
--SHELTER, by Shelter Productions. A classic, and very much
recommended. Shows techniques and structures from around the world.
ISBN 0-679-76948-x
--TIPS and YURTs by Blue Evening Star. NOT recommended, very poor yurt
design. ISBN withheld in disgust.
--MONGOLIAN CLOUD HOUSES-How to Build a Yurt, by Dan Kuehn--have
purchased, should have it by Twelfth Night

OTHER BOOKS:
--KING RENE'S BOOK OF LOVE--want to see some amazing late-period tents?
Start here! ISBN 0-8076-0989-7
--MEDIEVAL WARFARE, by Terenace Wise-- a few tidbits on camping set out,
not much.
--TUDOR AND JACOBEAN TOURNAMENTS, by Alan Young. Good descriptions of
elaborate tents, very helpful for this time period. ISBN 0-911378-75-8
--AN HISTORICAL GUIDE TO ARMS AND ARMOR, by Stephen Bull--Great color
illustrations of tents. At least worth checking out from the library.
ISBN 0-8160-2620-3
--OXFORD ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE CRUSADES--ed. by Jonathan
Riley-Smith. Some good information, but have to glean it carefully.
Another library book. ISBN 0-19-820435-3

PUBLICATIONS:
--National Geographic March 1962. Article on Yurts.
--Compleat Anarchonist #65, A Japanese Miscellany by Anthony J. Bryant.
Has rare info on Japanese tents and camp furniture.
--Period Pavilions by Coryn Weigle (owner of Medieval Miscellany).
Whatever people think of Ms. Weigle's company, this publication started
many of us with our first attempts at making tents. Recommended.
--Compleat Anarchonist #26-Pavilions of the Known World.
--The Incompleat Camper-A Guide for Camping in the SCA by F. L.
Watkins. Has some interesting hints.
--photocopies of Soviet book on the artwork for the epic poem Hamsah by
Nizami, artwork collected by Prof. Khamid Suleimanov, has incredible
pictures of elaborate middle-Eastern tents. I am publishing portions of
this on my web site soon, and will notify you when it is available.
--CIBA Review-TENTS-1968/3--Very much worth getting. Has some info and
pictures of items (including a picture of a pennant holder from a 17th
century pavilion).
--Lady Myfanwy's Hybrid Pavilion, by Lady Myfanwy Ddirwestol ffrech
Gruffudd--Start to Finish manual on how she built her pavlion
--Historical Overview of Medieval and Renaissance Tents, by Mistress
barbary Elspeth Ham--article sent me by Duchess Susannah Griffon,
permission not yet obtained to copy
--Construction of Medieval Style Pavlions, by Duchess Susannah
Griffon--article, permission given to recopy
--The Pavilion as Used in Medieval and Renaissance Tournaments, by
Mistress Barbary Elspeth Ham--article, permission not yet obtained to
copy

..plus a bunch of stuff that I obtained permission to put on the web
site, and which I have already transferred.

Did you find some publications that I haven't?
