Have I told you all lately how much I am enjoying this tent guild? :)
I put the question out today about Norse tents, our Australian friend
Stephen Wyley rides to the rescue with a referrel to a friend, and his
friend Peter Beatson writes with a URL for the original dimensions of
the Oseberg and Gokstad tents. You can see it at
http://freehosting2.at.webjump.com/2375c374c/fr/frojel-webjump/Html/Doc1.html.
It also includes directions on sewing the membrane, although they use
canvas.
There is also an interesting site at
http://www.qnet.fi/rus-project/The_voyages_in_1996-97.html, which shows
period tents, waterproofed with a "decoction of willow bark, tar and
horse fat". I've written to the authors, hoping for more information.
I'll put the link on my web site, so I won't lose it.
YIS,
Mira
