That's what I do :)  For big canvas, I figure where I can cut it so it will be
in several pieces (not just 40+ yards at one time) and still get my panels out
of it, chunk it in the biggest washer I can find with HOT water, and no soap,
and let it rip.  If you are using a synthetic, of course it is not necessary.
It will not affect the waterproofing capabilities on an untreated canvas.

Lady Marguerite has a good point about how wrinkled it gets if you try to dry it
in a commercial dryer.  It may also 'marble' your canvas, where the edges on the
outside of the wadded up canvas will be a lighter color than the interior.  I
usually put it in the dryer  just enough to get most of the water out, but still
damp, then take it home and hang it over my privet hedge (for some reason, my
neighbors think I am a bit 'off').
