PE - Re: Welsh Tent plans

I saw one standing at Lilies War. (It was still standing *after* the storm
destroyed the mundane tents, too. <grin>) It is basically the shape of the
top of the French Two-Bell pavilion, but tall enough to stand in. (I used my
two-bell this way in an emergency, when there was no one around to help me
raise it all the way up.)

Let me see if I can draw it in ascii:

Well, it doesn't look oval - but it is. You use triangular gores on the
sides, and 2 long, wide pieces (overlapped for the door) for the center.
                     ___________ ___________
    /\ /\ | | | /\ /\

  / \ / \ | | | / \ / \ for

/ \/ \| | |/ \/ \ side
-----------------------------------------------------------------
You can use more gores (I ran out of room/patience) The more/wider the gores,
the farther the tent will flare out.
Sew together (except the door side), either patch over the points, or make
into eyelets for the ridgepole, cut around the bottom to make it oval, add
stake loops to the bottom of the tent and ties to the door, find poles the
right height, and you are done!

A ridgepole can be added for more stability - but you need two people to lift
the poles and additional hardware, then.

I believe Master Sigtrig Foamcarver of the Kingdom of Calontir built it. He
might have better plans, and loves sharing knowledge.

Try building a "Barbie Model" of your pavillion, before you go out & purchase
the fabric. That will help you work out the details and avoid some costly
mistakes. Use some easy scale like 1 inch = 1 foot - an inch of Barbie tent
will be equal to a foot of real tent, that way. You can see how tall it will
be, how tall of poles you need, etc. Then donate the mock-up to some little
girl in your life, and make her day.
