wrt sleeping on ropes....i agree that padding you would use on the ground 
should work on the ropes...i did sleep one night (a warm one!) just on the 
sheepskins (one layer); it was comfortable enough to go to sleep but i could 
feel the rope crossover points; i suspect that i would have been fine with 
one more layer of sheepskins or possibly a featherbed, but the closed-cell 
foam, though not period, has been most comfortable...I am planning on a straw 
mattress on the ropes next year to see how that works; since the bed is up 
off the floor shouldn't have a problem with wetness....

btw, i had the height of the bed made so that the 20 gallon mundane plastic 
tubs i use to haul/store "stuff" would fit under the bed; makes it much nicer 
in the tent to have those out of the way!
