[Periodencampments] camping possiblilities

Dear Cousins:  I am looking for options which would look relatively period
[limited budget & strength] & would be locally accessible in the way of
tentage.  I'd tho't of purchasing a commercial sunshade & altering it w/
fabric.
Has anyone tried this?  Does it work?  Pitfalls?  [I am a non-sewer, but can
manage straight seams, I think.]
As I will probably only have one time to do it, I would prefer something that
looks nice & isn't glaring to the eye.
