Well piddle.  No boom.  Not even a loud "fzzzzzt" and a few hours of global bad hair...

Good news though, Ron Paul has a big announcement coming today.  Speculation has it that he's going to finally fess up to being some guy named John Titor and that the true end of the world comes on 10/22 at approximately 2:34 CET due to a tachyon field failure in the main resonating ring of the LHC.  So all hope is not lost.

It's also rumored that he will be providing depository access to a Nigerian bank account where your life savings may be secured until after the End of the World is over...

At approximately 3:00 am September 10, in the Year of our Lord, 2008, being Anno Societatus XLIII the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) goes online.  If all goes well, we shall all be instantly vaporized in an ever expanding cloud of matter, light, and energy, just as the creator's of "our" Universe were vaporized 13.73 billion years ago, when "their" LHC went online, thus proving the existence of the Higgs-Bison, humpty-backed camels, the God Particle, and the Hogfather, and ending the current controversy over the North Carolina Bigfoot, all in one swoop.

As modern medievalist, we have often feasted and drank our lauds to the End of the World. In fact, one particular End of World Party and an electric fence is etched in the Pain Assisted Learning (PAL) part of my mind, but we'll save that story for bards and campfires...  Yes, we've all partied like it's 1499 only to awake to a pounding of brain flesh and another ratenous day upon this wretched earth, as mere semi-nobles who must (all too soon) saunter home to a dreary week of laundry, skeleton-hoards, and Sonic burgers.  But, take heart, for we've never had science on our side, so maybe this time we'll get it right.

Maybe there is a God Particle.  Maybe we'll find it.  And, maybe, this time, it won't bring on the Spanish Inquisition...

Of, course, if all predictions are wrong and we instead create a black hole, then, I reckon, we all get a group hug soon...
