One never knows what may happen when a decision is made.
Take for instance, the Business meeting. 45 minutes after Giovanna and I left the Keep and arrived home, the drizzling rain that was falling combined with the Artic winds, to caused a traffic death just north of our exit. A young man spun out of control. I will forever be thankful that the meeting was changed. Being alive is a most excellent reason and perhaps a result of our one time change of our business meetings location. Thank you Dom and Dave.
Mike, thanks for your input. A gaming business had been contacted and one another would not post. But that was awhile ago. I have contact posters if you want them to put up. Coffee shops are also good places to post. Our membership has been improving. All of our meetings are in public places and our garb does draw interest. That is why we encourage those attending populace to wear garb. I have encouraged non active members to come and visit old friends and to share their history of our Barony. Anything that you can help implement to attract new members is fine. Just run the ideas by myself and others officers so that we know SCA policies are being followed. Do you want to become the next Hospitaler? My term is up in October... let me know.

just my 2 cents.. I would think if you/we want to find new folks, then we would find a place new folks are at. Now, if was me, I would have that populace at the student center, or.. golden cor.. or.. anywhere new folks might be found at. To me thats a no brainer.. Now there are those will will disagree... and we can .. disagree..
my thoughts.
populace should be the calling card of who we are, put it on campus.. Populace is not really for just us, its also a .. hey who the hell are they.. lets cheak them out... we walk up in costume.. we get new folks.. matter of fact, unless its a privite practice, or a private .. say officer meeting then.. we need be right there out in the open. We have to have folks see us. If we do not get new membership then we do one of 2 things.. we self perpetuate and do not grow.. and.. then die. We must have new members.
all fighter practice (light and heavy) need to be in a place that mass traffic can see and talk to.
Demos? do we have any "ins"" with the gaming/comic book community? thats how we used to get a lot of great members we need to get back to the on campus populace.. the ol **the walking the hall** for membership. Thre are 2 comic shops here, I am going to start talking to them.
Did miss anything? I want new or old chiv fighters get out..
so.. we need new members.. how do we get them, we need lots and lots of fighters.. how do we get them.. and we need to be visable, creative, open, and .. most of all freindly.
If you agree ar disagree thats great.. speak up.
I want to see more fighters.. Baron Brian, thanks for all your help in that area.

I liked moving it to the 8th also. This gave people time to recover from New Years festivities.As for location..I actually thought moving it towards the Conroe area would be nice this month since our "impromtu" business meeting was held in Huntsville last month. There was at least one member that voiced negatively about the Business meeting being held in Huntsville. Ironically, that person is now wanting the Populace meeting to be held in Huntsville when it would be closer if it were moved to the Willis/Conroe area.If we hold it at the "Shop"..we can still do food. It's called "potluck". There is also a working kitchen to prepare the food and set up a buffet line.The last time we held meetings in Huntsville..it was done at the Golden Calf. Food sucked and we had small turnout.Since this is the New Year and the vocalized concern for a good "turn-out"..I vote to hold it at the shop. I believe this would be our strongest turn-out..and if I am wrong

Right. It is certainly understandable and desirable to move the meetings when there is a holiday conflict. The problem I had with moving the LOCATION of the business meeting was there was no good reason for it.

This from what I understand is a one shot deal because normally our Populace is the 1st Thursday of the month. That was New Year's Day. The Fire Station was already booked for the 2nd Thursday (8th). This like the business meeting in December (according to what I understand) is just a one shot deal (many people were going out of town and needed the time to pack, etc).

Actually there was more than one member of the Barony that had a problem with the business meeting moving to Huntsville.
The reason I didn't want it to move the business meeting and the reason I would like to keep the populace meeting north is consistency. I have seen full, to over flowing meetings like the ones we are having now dissolve in to practically nothing in no time because the powers that be start messing with a good thing. In my twenty years in Raven's Fort I have seen business meeting held in Conroe at least three times. All the locals in the south start attending and both of the meetings grow. Then we get a new Seneschal that thinks Conroe is too far to drive and so the meetings get moved north again and the people in the south quite going because asking us to drive north twice a month is too much of a burden. It is a little unreasonable when the folks in the north are not willing to drive down once.
There has been talk lately about doing online meetings so no one will have to drive south. Well, I won't go into why online meeting suck so badly again, but I will say that if the people in the north do not want to drive south, there are other groups that would love a shot at the Conroe area. Driving to Huntsville takes me almost an hour. Driving to GatesEdge would take me twenty minuets or less. I'm guessing that it would not take long for them to become a barony if they had the rich area that is right in their back yard to developed. I wonder what would happen locally if such a change took place.
Let me say that I love Raven's Fort and I am willing to suffer almost anything to protect it. I think that I have proved that over the last several years. In return there should be reciprocation. In recent conversation with our Baron, he assured me that the south is very important to our Barony and he has no intention in let it slip into neglect. That is excellent. The best way that I know of maintaining a happy south is to continue with the successful schedule as established and stop the unfriendly talk of doing away with the only effort that shows a presence in the area.
Let me close by saying that I believe that our Seneschal, Baron and Baroness are doing an exceptional job. The Barony is healthier than I have seen it in almost a decade. Let's not rock the boat.

As for location..I actually thought moving it towards the Conroe area would be nice this month since our "impromtu" business meeting was held in Huntsville last month.

Right you are ! Public visibility.
I did not want the first thing said after Elke's Raven's Guild announcement to be "Good, now maybe we can get back to having our meetings at the college like the old days", even though it was the first thing I thought. But since you brought it up... With any luck we can start having the meetings at the college again like the old days. I am not sure what needs to happen for that, but it certainly was good for us in the past.
Several years ago the student center closed a short time for remodeling and during that period someone dropped the ball on paperwork so we lost our status as a student organization. No student organization, no meeting room. Bad thing. Hopefully now, with the generosity of the Guild, we can reestablish a visibility on campus.
