My take on the issue of whether one or many dishes should be allowed in
a competition entry is that it probably depends on the presentation. I
think that a big, elaborate spread could make fair judgment difficult
because:

In Calontir, we have three sets of judging criteria for cooking entries.
1 - single dish entries
2 - meal (minimum of 4 dishes)
3 - Sotleties and Illusion foods

That way, single dish entries are not competing against a larger entry or a 
very elaborate confection. They each compete in their own categories. They 
are each judged in the same basic areas. These competition criteria were 
overhauled about four or five years ago by the kingdom cooks guild to make 
them more judge and participant friendly.

 For example:  For flavor/taste:
	10 - I'd steal this from head table
	  8 - I'd steal this from my child
	  6 - Tastes great.  I'll ask for the recipe
	  5 - Appropriate for this dish
	  3 - Taste is not as expected
	  1 - Spit it out

NOTE: don't take the above example as gospel, I am working from a memory 
that hasn't looked at the criteria for over two years.

Perhaps, in your kingdoms, the cooks could get together and revise your 
criteria to account for the different types of entries?

We also include points for judge's impression - the ooh-aah factor. That's 
where the table setting or presentation can make the difference between two 
close entries.

If two Ember pies are entered, the one where the cook took the extra time 
to make the presentation memorable (for example: added flowers, or used 
herbs in the dish to create a pattern on the surface of the pie) will win 
that single dish category over another who did not make that little extra 
effort, all other things being the same (documentation, taste, methods 
used, ingredients, etc...)

I think its great that you have so many cooks who want to enter a cooking 
category in competition.  I wish we had more here.
