I have read in a few places that honey is worse for children than sugar, being
an "animal product" it has something in it (?) that rots teeth faster and more
  thoroughly than sugar.

Heading off topic rapidly.

It is widely repeated (and might even be true) that honey can have mild
doses of botulism poison, that would be insignificant for an adult, but
devastating for children, and for that reason honey sweetened foods are not
suitable for infants. Either way, my infant daughter isn't getting any.

Sugar is bad for the teeth, not because of itself, but because it is a
wonderful calorie and food source for oral bacteria that cause plaque and
tooth decay. See my previous off topic post on how sugar is sugar is sugar,
whether it is fructose concentrated by bees (honey) or sucrose made by U.S.
Sugar, Incorporated.
