Adam Smith, discussing economic change over time in the _Wealth of Nations_
(1776--its publication was the big event of the year), mentions that in
early stages of development chicken may be as cheap as butcher's meat. The
clear implication is that when he was writing, and for some considerable
period before, chicken was a relatively high priced meat.
