Then there were the days when we were doing free feasts, with no advance
reservations required.

We asked people to tell us if they were coming, if possible, in our
publicity, and a lot of them did. We asked around in the other nearby
groups to get an idea how many expected to come. We were told how many
people had arranged for crash space (this is Midrealm, so it was a day
event with tourney, feast, and revel, no camping) and assumed all of them
would eat. We counted our own group; a fair percentage would be cooking or
serving, but they would still be eating. We prayed that we would not get
more people than would fit in the hall (we never did). We usually had
fallback plans (around noon you take a count and if necessary send someone
out to buy x more pounds of chicken, x more pounds of rice, and some fruit
to go on the table); in general our estimates were good enough that we did
not have to use these plans.

On the other hand, when we did a coronation we took paid reservations with
a maximum at how many people we could fit in the hall, and a waiting list
for when we sold out.
