Nefs were generally made of metal, often silver or gold.  Talk about
conspicuous consumption!! Benvenuto Cellini made an exquisite one, if you
have access to photos of his work.  Very appropriate.  And absolutely
impossible to needlepoint for something as small as a badge.  It might
look great on a large cushion.  Drops are also hard to needlepoint or
cross stitch, because one side comes out jagged.  Think of what we are
actually going to do.  Picture a hat band ornament, or a little badge on
a pouch, perhaps a cover for your feast basket.   We want it simple and
easy to recognize.  People usually look at symbols you wear, but don't
often ask about them.  If we hope to increase interest and participation
in period cookery, and in its sharing via this list, then we need
something that is not obscure to the viewer.
  BTW, being heraldically challenged, I don't know what it would look
like if something is 'fieldless'.  How do you render 'nothing'?
