One reason is that it takes 100's (maybe 1000's) of flowers to make an ounce
of saffron. So, in less you have a *very* big yard, growing your own saffron
is not very practical.

Re: other croci -- saffron has been expensive for hundreds of years. If there
was another crocus that produced the same flavor, someone surely would have
found it by now. Safflower, which is sometimes called Mexican Saffron, is a
different plant altogether, and doesn't taste the same.

Also, other croci may be poisonous, so don't eat of them unless you know for
sure that they aren't.
