I shouldn't read stuff that scary before I've had a few cups of coffee. . .

Here we have a tote that tends to come to most events.  The only things in it
that would be used for consumeables are tea bags and I think at one time it
hot chocolate packets as well.  The rest is things like band-aids, paper
towels, etc.

My opinion on the scary tote. . .have everyone help sort through it.  That way
everyone can see the poor condition of the items and understand why they were
thrown out.  Then convert the tote to non-perishables you really need like
paper towels, band-aids and something to clean cuts with, dish washing
detergent, cleaning supplies, and other little extras that you might need in
the kitchen.
