When did cubebs disappear from common use, and why?

Also....  In Meredith Willson's *The Music Man*, Professor Hill sings a song
called "Trouble" ("...with a capital T, and that rhymes with P, and that
stands for pool!")  The song describes ways to tell if one's son is straying
from the strait and narrow ("Is there a dime novel hidden in the corn crib?
A nicotine stain on his index finger?  The minute he leaves the house, does
he re-roll his knickerbockers *below* the knee?  Is he starting to memorise
jokes out of *Captain Billy's Whiz-Bang*?")  And - the point of this whole
paragraph - there's a line that goes "We're talkin' 'bout Bevo! Talkin'
'bout cubebs!"  Is he referring to the spice, or to something entirely
different?
