The first modern brandy was distilled in approximately 1300 C.E. at the
Montpellier medical school by Arnaldus de Villa Nova, a French medical
professor.
Dates are courtesy of The Food Chronology and the MS Encyclopedia, which
have exactly the same text.

I think that the Northmen (not Vikings, that is a job description) ice-
distilled mead, as they would allow the wine to ferment, and then take the ice
out of it, achieving the same thing as brandy. As far as I can tell, they
didn't call it anything different than mead, they just drank it stronger.
