My understanding is, yes and no. Sugar and associated products were
still being imported to mainstream Europe, since sugar cane wouldn't
grow through most of the landmass, but in the second half of the Middle
Ages sugar cane was being grown and processed on Cyprus, IIRC. Halving
the distances involved might well tend to make more diverse products
available to the emerging middle class.
