Anyone who sets up a competition has the right to determine whatever rules
they like. If the creaters of a particular A/S event think that Norse
gripping beasts on Elizabethan bodices are the cats pajamas, as long as the
rules were up front at the start, thats the way it goes.

If the rules dont suit you, you can always run your own competition. If
authenticity and reproduction are important to you, make contests that
reward that. You may not be able to enter (rather tacky to enter your own
contest! :)), but you can foster the qualities that are important to you,
and foster the authentic over the sensational. Who knows, maybe it will
catch on!
