If I smell, injest, or touch lemons or limes I go into a severe asthma attack and cannot breath. If I am even remotely near a citronella plant or fumes from a torch using citronella I can't breath. Last year at Pennsic I couldn't see the citronella plant behind a sign and started having problems breathing. My husband and I looked around to see where the lemons were that could be causing the asthma attack, it wasn't until we took a couple steps forward that My husband noticed the citronella plant behind the sign. We were in line to order food. I told him what I wanted and had to leave to get away from the citronella to breath. The next night we were at a neighboring camp (who was using citronella in their torches) and when we left to go back to our camp the lane was filled with citronella fumes from all the torches. I had such a severe asthma attack that my hands and arms were going numb because I could not breath. I ended up at Chirurgin's point for three hours with oxygen on me and lots of excellent care from the staff. I don't know exactly what in the lemons, limes, or citronella that sets my asthma off but it has gotten worse over the last couple years.
