Yes. :-) Loofa are very much period...whether they were used as sponges or not
I have no idea....however, the loofa is a white-flowered guord and native to
the Old World. It is also , in all probability, the edible squash often
referred to in pre-New World European/Middle Eastern recipes.. At the very
least it is one of the leading candidates, IMO.
