Hmmm... Thinking of the bottle of rose hips I bought at Pennsic... Just
took a look at Medicine & Society. Women made many teas and drinks, and
substituted one thing for another as the need arose. The only difference
in period practice is that modern day laws prevent us from serving all
the beer, ale, mead, and wine the diners can drink, kids included, so
that we need substitutes.

Since these drinks were used in matters of health, and since we have
plenty of evidence of the humoral theories governing food as medicine, I
see no reason we can't serve these drinks, quite legitimately, during
feasts.

Cinnamon sticks, cloves and oranges...aren't these in some of the later
period hypocras versions? I think I'd like cider vinegar and honey with
these, for a cold drink. I'm frustrated right now because I'm out of
mint. Decided to ransack the assorted teas for some mint teas as Sindara
suggested.

Thanks, Lainie, and hug Rotrude for us--she may have led us to a Great
Discovery!

Regards,
