Where is your "Barren  Desert"?  I send my parents in Scottsdale, AZ  bags of
Vidalias all the time.  They ALWAYS arrive wonderful.   For my parents I use the
following company:  http://www.vidaliaonion.com/

For my friends in Germany I send a small box (that I do myself) Pack them in
straw and do not let them touch each other.  Here (at home) I store my onions and
potatoes in "nylon stockings, knotted between each onion or potato and hung on a
rod".  That way I just cut below a knot to get what I want.
