nope, they took the sap that oozez out, it is sort of whitish, like elmers glue.
the doc at the smithsonian [well, it was one of those kid sleep over programs I
got sucked into before I found out they can be really fun and started
volunteering to go to ride heard on kids just so I could play too...] said they
were found in a jar in a tomb[and no, after 12 years i can't remember which one
they found them in, just that it was in a worker not royal site] they had been
mixed with barley flour to a good formable paste, then rolled in barley flour to
keep them from sticking. some of them had inclusions of nuts and sesame seeds as
well. they tasted different, modern marshmallows are flavored with vanilla.
these had a flowery sort of taste, with a mild barley flavor. you could probably
duplicate the taste by taking barley water, adding just enough sugar to make it
lightly sweet and steeping chamomile and red clover along with it, or mixing
this crysanthemum flower powdered drink mix that my auntie used to send us with
barley water.

hey, Master A, any idea where i can find any more of the stuff? it came in
little individuaal serving plastic bags, but i have no idea what it is called-i
never could read ideograms...and Bei Ching is no longer with us...

getting a bit nostalgic
