FIRST ANNUAL
BEST OPEN HEARTH CHEF
OF THE KNOWN WORLD

Estrella War XV is proud to be the site of the first annual Open Hearth
Cooking Competition of the Known World.

Chefs of the Fifteen Kingdoms are invited to an on-site cooking competition in
the Historical Encampment.

All cooking entries will be made on open hearths, "pit" or fire roasted. For
this event, cast iron will be considered historically accurate. All entries
must be made in a documented period style using only Old World ingredients,
spices and herbs available to the general populace in western Europe. (Hence,
no potatoes, tomatoes Indian corn, etc.)

Food items may be prepared in advance as would have been available in the
still room or herbarium of a large estate or castle or what would have been
carried with a large army or crusade. (Spice mixes, marinated meats, etc.) All
other preparations of the entry must be processed on-site, the day of the
event. Any diversion from historical preparation will be for modern health and
safety consideration only.

All recipes with accompanying documentation will be made available for
publication, and should be original and copyright assignable. Please bring
copies of your documentation and recipe for sharing with other entrants and to
include in the cookbook of this event.

Three Judges, chosen by the Historical Encampment Autocrats, at sundown on
Thursday, February 11, 1999 will conduct judging. The outcome of this event
will have no effect on the War Points for Estrella War XV.

Firewood (oak and pinion pine, pecan if possible) will be available for all
entrants. The Historical Encampment will be open to any entrant to set up an
open hearth as part of the event. All open hearths must meet the Schnepf Farm
fire safety requirements and be placed in the Historical Encampment at the
direction of the Historical Encampment Autocrats. No modern items may be
visible.

This event will be held in the Historical Encampment, all entrants and guests
must be in an attempt of Medieval garb and conduct conversations as
appropriate to their persona.

A Potluck feast for all entrants and guests will be held following the
judging. Guests are asked to bring additional items for the PotLuck. The
autocrats of this event will provide bread trenchers. Each participant in the
cooking competition is welcome to bring three additional guests for the feast.
Bring seating, if possible.

The Historical Encampment hosts over 600 school children on Friday morning.
Any entrant in the cooking competition is welcome to set up a slow cooking
hearth or roasting kitchen as part of this demonstration. Please be prepared
to answer lots of questions from these students.
