Yes, I'm quite well aware of this, and considering that I'm wanting a horse
right now, it's a bit inconvenient for me too. Yes, they're also used for
dog meat, but ride along to a slaughterhouse as I did, and you'll see almost
every fast food chain in the US pull up and load up. While I don't like it,
the knackers do provide a service, if only having uncaring horse owners
realize that their animal will bring higher prices if it's fed, not starved.

You quote a 1500 pound horse- that would most likely be a draft horse, since
most riding horses are in the 1200 lb range. Draft horses are not preferred.
Current prices, last time I heard them mentioned around here are roughly
$0.90 per lb. Definitely makes it hard to compete.
